From Curiosity to Insight: Understanding the Research Process

JAKARTA-kanalsembilan.com  (March 11, 2025)

Behind every big decision—both in the business world, public policy, and communication strategy—there’s always one thing that is often invisible: research. Research is the foundation of every quality study. It is a systematic process of answering questions in a measurable manner and usually starting from curiosity or doubts about a phenomenon, or the need to ascertain something objectively.

From there, the question is formulated in a more structured way, then determined the right method to answer it. Generally, research has two main approaches. Quantitative methods are used to measure and test things through number and statistical data.

While qualitative methods help dig into perceptions, experiences, and dynamics that can not always be translated in numbers. In practice, the two are often combined to produce a more complete understanding.

This is what is shared by Asti Putri (Lead Research, Co-founder of COMM ID) COMM ID Research entitled “Towards the Era of Electric Cars: To What extent is Indonesia Ready?”, when he was a guest lecturer in a lecture session at Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) Serpong some time ago.

“The research started because something wasn’t sure. There are things that need to be checked with the data, not just assumptions.” Asti Putri.

In preparing COMM ID Research for example, the question is not just about the sales trend.

1. Industrial Readiness

Is the industry ready? Many manufacturers come to Indonesia. Are they building factories here or just selling products? How is the readiness of the supply chain, including the production of small spare parts?

2 Government Policy

Is the regulation synchronous from upstream to downstream? Are there incentives? Does the policy support investment and industry development?

3. Consumers

Changes in consumer behavior are remarkable. It used to be a car full of buttons, now almost all the features are on one screen. It used to start a car with a key, now it can be with a digital system. Not everyone is ready for this change. Some are buying, but not necessarily ready to use or vice versa.

4. Infrastructure

What about charging electricity? Is infrastructure like home charging already available? What about SPKLU (General Electric Vehicle Charging Station) in mall or office? Is it easy to use? Is the payment system practical?

To answer this question, the research team conducted:

  • Literature review (reviewing regulations and policies one by one to see the direction of government policy)
  • In-depth interview with industry players, consumers (who have bought or are planning to buy), media, and community
  • Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to see the dynamics of perception between stakeholders
  • Field observation (watching directly user behavior in SPKLU)
  • Social listening (monitoring public conversations through social listening on social media)

Understanding this process is important so as not to see research as a collection of numbers or thick reports. “The challenge is not just collecting data, but how to make the data sound and generate relevant insights. To be sure, quantitative and qualitative methods are just as strong, equally powerful, “concluded Asti.

As a researcher, what is important is clarity in reading information. Any information, if well analyzed, can be meaningful data. Because in the end, a good decision is born from a evidence-based understanding.
